Bundjalung Country-based First Nations artist Hannah Lange explores the relationships between people, place and community through her intuitive approach to painting. At Local: Box Hill, her series Country Weaves Us Together, displayed across Lobby 1 and Lobby 2, reflects the connections that link residents to each other and to the land.
The works draw inspiration from both the surrounding landscape and personal memory. The mountainous backdrop of the Dandenong Ranges is echoed through the flowing forms, sitting alongside references to Hannah’s own connection to Country. These layered influences create compositions that feel grounded in place, while also carrying a broader sense of continuity across landscapes.
Using acrylic, fine linework and dot painting, Hannah allows each piece to develop organically. Lines weave and intersect, forming patterns that suggest movement, rhythm and interconnection. Through this process, the works build a sense of narrative through accumulation, where each mark contributes to a larger, shared whole.
Rather than telling a single story, the series reflects many stories existing at once. The interlacing lines act as a visual language for relationships between people, communities and environments, where no single path is dominant, and meaning is formed through connection.
“These works explore the intricacies of weaving as both a physical and spiritual practice. The intertwining of the lines become a reflection of how we, too, are woven into place. These artworks are about finding home through care, respect, and connection.” – Hannah.
As residents move through the lobbies, the works offer a moment to pause. The repetition of line and form creates a sense of calm, while the layered detail invites closer attention over time. In this way, the paintings quietly hold space for reflection, grounded in both place and shared experience.
At Local: Box Hill, Hannah’s work brings together landscape, memory and community, creating a visual expression of how people and place are continuously woven together.
