Melbourne-based abstract painter Katrina McKeon brings colour, movement and emotion to Local: Box Hill through her Passions series, which includes Passions Calm, Passions Prosper and Passions Embrace. Positioned at entrances and key transition points across the basement, lobby and Level 17, the works act as visual markers, guiding residents as they move through shared spaces.
Katrina’s approach draws on the traditions of Abstract Expressionism. Layers of acrylic paint are applied and reworked intuitively, allowing each composition to evolve through gesture, movement and rhythm.
Transparent and dense areas interact to create depth and energy, with colour playing a central role in shaping the experience of each work. Her use of vibrant, shifting palettes reflects the diversity of Box Hill, where different cultures, influences and ways of living intersect. The works sit within this context, balancing bold expression with a sense of cohesion across the series.
Each piece carries its own character while remaining connected to the others, creating a sequence of works that unfold across the building. As residents move between spaces, colour and form shift, offering moments of contrast, pause and transition.
Rather than directing attention to a single focal point, the works operate as part of the everyday experience of the building. They mark movement, signal entry, and subtly shape how spaces are encountered.
At Local: Box Hill, Katrina’s work demonstrates how abstraction can sit within lived environments, where colour and gesture become part of the rhythm of daily life.
